KOCHI: The demand for fancy mobile phone numbers is on the rise it seems. Many cell phone service providers have now started auctioning of numbers to cash in on the trend. Recently a business man from Thiruvananthapuram paid Rs 12.5 lakhs to own a mobile number.
"It is mainly businessmen who buy the fancy numbers at high prices," said BSNL PRO Vinod Kumar, in Kochi. It is the snob value attached to these fancy numbers - which are rightly called vanity numbers - that make them favourites of many people.

For telecom firms, the worst is yet to come
The telecom industry’s worst fears seem to be coming true.
Intense competition has started forcing operators to slash prices, impacting margins. This, even as volume growth remains stagnant, with most operators seen reporting lower-than-average subscriber additions this quarter.
And the scenario is seen worsening due to regulatory uncertainties.
“Subscriber additions were down 36% month on month in June to 4.6 million, taking the GSM subscriber base to 677 million,” Rumit Dugar, Manoj Singla and Udit Garg, analysts with Religare, noted in a note dated July 23.

For e-governance, stable telecom network needed, says Governor
Shillong, July 20 (PTI) Meghalaya Governor R S Mooshahary today said e-governance "cannot create impact" in states across the north east region without developing stable telecommunications networks. "We have to make the inaccessible areas of the northeast accessible. Unless a stable telecommunications network can be developed, e-governance cannot create impact," he said while addressing an e-governance consultative workshop - Citizen Centric e-Government -- aimed at making government services easier accessibility to the citizen and ensuring efficiency, transparency and reliability.

Cheapest 3G service providers in India
Verdict
Aircel's is clearly the cheapest 3G tariff across packs. However, its speed is slower at 3.6 Mbps for all but the costliest plan. Reliance also has very attractive plans but hasn't announced any new sachet plans and therefore might not attract sporadic users.
Airtel, Idea Cellular, and Vodafone more or less match the pricing amongst them and are not really very attractive. Vodafone is the most expensive of the three. Tata Docomo is the worst of the lot with very limited options, none of which is unlimited and on top of that the operator has the costliest unbundled usage charge, so if you exceed your data limit you will pay very heavily.BSNL also has some good plans, but since it does not have a very systematic way of presenting tariff plans on its site, it gets really confusing to figure out which plan is available and which is not.
TRAI Issues Quality of 2G, 3G and 4G Mobile Internet Service Standards
